I have been a reluctant convert to the Bluetooth tracker ecosystem for years, dutifully attaching Apple AirTags and, more recently, Google's $29 Pixel Tag to my keys, luggage, and bike. They work - until they don't. The fundamental limitation of every Bluetooth tracker on the market has been range: you're dependent on the density of nearby phones running the right network, and in rural areas, parking garages, or while traveling internationally, that density often drops to zero. So when a small startup called MeshMark sent me its new LoRa-based tracker, the MeshMark One, I was intrigued but not optimistic. Two weeks of testing later, I'm genuinely shocked at the accuracy, and I'm seriously reconsidering whether the Pixel Tag and AirTag are the right tools for the job. The MeshMark One uses LoRaWAN - the same low-power, long-range radio protocol that powers industrial IoT deployments - to create a mesh network between MeshMark devices that can stretch for miles rather than meters. In practice, this means the tracker can communicate its position even when no phone is nearby, as long as another MeshMark One (or any LoRaWAN gateway) is within range. In my testing across suburban New Jersey and rural Vermont, the MeshMark One located my misplaced backpack from 1.4 miles away, triangulated through three other MeshMark devices I had placed around my property. That's a distance no Pixel Tag or AirTag could ever achieve. The device itself is roughly the size of a Pixel Tag, waterproof to IP67, and runs for eighteen months on a single coin cell battery. The companion app, which runs cleanly on Android 17 with full location privacy controls, shows the tracker's position on a map with accuracy that rivals dedicated GPS trackers in dense mesh coverage areas. The catch, of course, is the network effect: LoRa mesh only works where there are other MeshMark devices, and the company's network is still sparse outside major cities. MeshMark is addressing this by partnering with community gateway programs and offering free gateways to early adopters in underserved areas. The price is steep at $79 per tracker - nearly three times the Pixel Tag - but for anyone who regularly loses gear in low-phone-density environments, the range advantage is transformative. In 2026, as the Pixel Tag and AirTag settle into a comfortable but limited niche, LoRa mesh represents the most credible challenge to the Bluetooth tracking duopoly, and the MeshMark One is the device proving it.
